About the Thyroid Ultrasound Procedure

About 30% of adults in the world have some kind of thyroid dysfunction. Ultrasound diagnostics allows you to detect any abnormalities in its structure, development and work. This is an effective method of recognizing endocrine diseases and thyroid cancer in the early stages, preventive health monitoring of people with harmful production factors or hereditary predisposition to pathologies of this organ, as well as solving problems of the reproductive system, in particular infertility.

High-precision modern equipment and first-class experienced doctors ensure fast and reliable results. The conclusions of BG LAB ultrasound diagnostics are definitely trusted by narrow specialists when prescribing treatment and operations on the thyroid gland.

What does a thyroid ultrasound examine?

Patients of any age undergo thyroid ultrasound. For patients aged 40+, it is included in the mandatory examination package (according to European standards). During the procedure, the doctor examines:

  • Size;
  • Position;
  • Build and structure;
  • Contours;
  • Echogenicity;
  • Presence of formations (nodules/cysts).

During a thyroid ultrasound, the parathyroid glands and nearby lymph nodes are also examined.

Advantages of the Procedure

Ultrasound of the thyroid gland is a completely non-invasive and safe way to diagnose diseases. Unlike CT or biopsy, ultrasound does not exert radiation or physical impact on the body, posing no threat to the patient's health. The study can be performed as often as required by the clinical case.

  • Developmental anomalies
  • Benign adenomas and cysts
  • Malignant neoplasms (thyroid cancer)
  • Thyroiditis (inflammation)
  • Hypothyroidism (organ size is smaller than normal, hormone volume is reduced) or Hyperthyroidism (hormone volume is increased)
  • Nodular goiter (a group of pathologies involving the formation of nodules in the organ)
  • Diffuse toxic goiter (enlargement of the gland, sharp hormonal failure)

How to prepare for a thyroid ultrasound?

Special preparation is not required for thyroid ultrasound at BG LAB. Immediately before the procedure, you must remove your scarf or headscarf and remove any jewelry from your neck. It is better to choose clothes with an open collar or neckline.

There are no restrictions on the time of eating, foods, and spices. To avoid nausea that may be caused by the sensor pressing on the thyroid gland, it is not recommended for the elderly and children to eat shortly before the examination.

It is advisable to prepare children and adolescents psychologically by telling them that thyroid ultrasound is a painless and quick procedure. It is necessary to describe what the doctor will do and why it is needed.

If the ultrasound is performed to determine the effectiveness of treatment, bring the results of the previous scan so that the doctor can assess the dynamics of changes in the organ.

How is the ultrasound procedure performed?

The patient lies face up on a comfortable couch, with their head tilted back and their neck as wide open as possible. The doctor applies a special gel with good ultrasound conductivity to the examination area, applies a sensor, moves it and records the parameters of the organ. The signal is processed by the program, and the image is displayed on the screen.

The duration of the procedure is 15-20 minutes. The pressure of the sensor or the need to hold the neck at an angle may cause slight discomfort, but the procedure is not painful.

How do I get the results?

The results can be collected 5-10 minutes after the ultrasound – the doctor needs some time to prepare the examination protocol. The patient receives the following documents:

  • Images showing various structures and possible changes.
  • A detailed written conclusion from the diagnostician.

The conclusion contains a description of the condition of the thyroid gland, its structure, size and possible deviations. Includes information about the presence, nature and size of any formations, if any. It assesses the condition of the parathyroid glands and lymph nodes.

It also provides an interpretation of ultrasound data indicating possible pathologies, recommendations for further examination or treatment.

If abnormalities are detected, the doctor may recommend a fine-needle biopsy under ultrasound control or a consultation with an endocrinologist for a more thorough analysis and determination of a further treatment plan or observation.
